Biography | Wendy Leung Music has always played a major role in Toronto singer/songwriter Wendy Leung’s life, her having been classically trained on the piano since the age of four. “I remember writing lyrics to a song I played at a music festival at the age of five or six and showing it to the adjudicator, hoping for some feedback.” While a far cry from true songwriting, a seed had already been planted in her head. Through her teenaged years, Wendy dabbled in lyric-writing, but stuck mostly to singing favourite pop songs at the top of her lungs. An early favourite was Mariah Carey, whose music taught her to “exercise [her] vocal range.” As her musical tastes matured somewhat, she began listening to Canadian singer/songwriters like Sarah McLachlan, Chantal Kreviazuk and Emm Gryner, as well as bands like Our Lady Peace. Recognizing songwriting as a skill she wanted to develop, Wendy began to write songs in 1998. Wendy’s first album, A Place to Start, was a compilation of songs written between then and 2000, and introduced audiences to what has become the foundation of her songs - a blend of piano, vocals, and raw emotion. Her sophomore release, This Time, introduces guitar, bass and drums to enhance the sound and complement the lyrical content. This album includes the foot-tapping pop song You, the aptly titled Jazz, the melancholic ballad Truth, and the harmonically dense Silently (The Game). Wendy continues to play in the Toronto area and is currently in-studio at Chemical Sound, recording her third full-length release. |
